In May 2022, I stepped off a boat and slipped into the private grounds of the Palazzo Venart. Titled the hidden gem of Venice, it’s just that – hidden and out of view, yet unsuspectingly nestled within the most sought-over postcode. Small but ever so grand, the hotel promises a change of pace from the bustling mainland where guests can slowly savour each moment of Venetian magnificence.
The Palazzo Venart was bought to life in the late 16th century by renowned Italian architect, Michele Sanmicheli, during the Renaissance period. Originally a private residence with ownership waltzing between families of Venetian society and politicians, it’s architectural style and interior has long served as a symbol of the city’s wealth and opulent heritage – and not much has changed since then.
In 2016, the Palazzo underwent restorations and remerged as a hotel designed to welcome guests into the depths of an immersive Venetian experience. Expect marble floors, sumptuous wallpapers, canopy beds layered with lush velvets, art from bygone eras and lashings of gilded detailing – which harmoniously come together for a cinematic feast for the eyes, heart and soul.
Palazzo Venart is a culinary haven where regional flavours take stage. The hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant, Glam, is a libertine gem that embarks on a delectable journey through the vibrant world of Venetian fare.
Within the grounds of the hotel resides a secret fairy tale garden, a rare oasis experienced in the bustle of Venice. I loved having my breakfast here, surrounded by a symphony of birdsong to start the day.
From heavenly cannoli to espresso that hits the spot, Pasticceria Rizzardini a sweet escape with a vintage Italian vibe. Tucked away near Campo San Polo, this charming family-ran bakery boasts a rich history dating all the way back to 1742. Drop by before 11am for freshly baked pizzete – and return the next day for seconds (and thirds).
When in Italy: the livelier the restaurant, the better the food. And in my view, a risotto is best served rowdy – this sentiment rings true at Dalla Marisa. A melting pot of locals who are here for nothing else than a good meal and a good chat without faff. Expect to be sat where there is room and served when they are ready. It’s unapologetic yet unforgettable.
Beyond the tourist path lays the true beauty of Venice. And as the saying goes, it’s very easy to get lost in Venice but it’s even easier to stumble across something magnificent.
The city of timeless romance is graced with six enchanting districts known as "sestieri." While San Marco and Rialto bask in their well-deserved fame, allow your heart to wander to the lesser-known treasures of Dorsoduro and Cannaregio for a more intimate perspective of Venice far from crowds.
Set the alarm and set off early. Venice transforms into a realm of pure enchantment in the early morning, as the city stirs from its slumber. Wander through the tranquil streets and canals, where the city seems to belong only to you.
Although the Gallerie dell'Accademia boasts a renowned art collection, I find the smaller galleries such as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Palazzo Grimani far more enriching. These hidden gems house world-class artworks in more intimate settings.
Embark on a captivating vaporetto voyage along the less-travelled waterways, such as the Cannaregio Canal or the evocative Giudecca Canal. Here, a view of authentic Venetian life unfolds, far removed from the bustling tourist throngs.
The epitome of timeless allure, Venice offers a shopping experience that transcends the ordinary. While not necessarily a shopping haven on par to its sisters of Florence or Milan, Venice possesses its unique and history charm when it comes to its retail offering.
Set aside a day to wander aimlessly through its labyrinthine streets, boutiques, and markets to unearth artisanal treasures and one-of-a-kinds you’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.
When I’m in town, I’ll slip into Martinuzzi, a timeless Venetian homewares store in Piazza San Marco, where I’ll load my arms with lace tablecloths from Burano and antique lampshades.
Move pass the mass-produced Murano souvenirs and make your way to L'Angolo Del Passato. A quaint and inviting space showcasing antique glassware and handmade works from local artists. A favourite amongst locals, pick up a piece destined for heirloom status.
Libreria Acqua Alta, a charming vintage bookshop inspired by Venice's floods, keeps its books safe in bathtubs and old gondolas. Two friendly cats slink in and out between the books, which include vintage art, local guides and modern Italian literature.
Honour the city’s opulence with statement pieces to make for wearable art. Opera skirts paired with a crisp white shirt, bold pyjama suits with feathered cuffs worn with sky high heels encrusted with jewels. Slinky twist front dresses with lashings of gold jewellery. Bold sunglasses and a red lip, always.
