Inside CAMILLA Silk Essentials
Silk cut on the diagonal refuses to behave like fabric. On the true bias, at forty-five degrees to the grain, the weave yields where a straight cut would resist. The garment shifts, settles, and moves when you do. That is the bias cut, and it is the foundation of CAMILLA Silk Essentials. Arriving 19 August in the fifth chapter of Elsewhere Palace, Cosmopolitan Opulence, the collection brings together nine styles in cream, navy and black. Each is a single, solid colour, realised in 100% silk. Our Founder and Creative Director Camilla Franks describes the collection simply: “It’s CAMILLA. More distilled.” Here, that distillation lives in every decision; in cut, weight and construction.
The Art of a Bias Cut
Most cloth follows the straight grain of the weave: the warp and the weft. A bias cut travels diagonally across both at forty-five degrees, giving silk a natural stretch it would not otherwise possess. Rather than sitting against its own structure, a bias cut silk dress follows the weight and movement of the fabric. French couturière Madeleine Vionnet introduced the technique in 1920s Paris. The 1930s turned the technique into a language, and silk has spoken it ever since. The distinction shows in movement. Straight-cut cloth holds its shape, while bias-cut silk travels in an unbroken line, swings rather than folds, and returns to stillness a moment after the wearer does. Its fluidity comes from the cut itself, allowing the fabric to respond without anything added to it.
What Does Momme Weight Mean — and Why Does It Matter?
Momme is the unit that measures silk density, much as thread count measures cotton. One momme represents the weight in pounds of a length of silk one hundred yards long and forty-five inches wide. The higher the number, the denser, more opaque and more durable the cloth. Dress-weight silk typically sits between sixteen and nineteen momme. Within CAMILLA Silk Essentials, the bias slip dresses and drawstring bias-cut pants are cut from 18.5-momme silk, while the asymmetric draped tops are cut from a lighter 14-momme silk. The 18.5-momme silk gives the dresses and pants enough substance to drape and hold their line while remaining light enough to move. In the asymmetric tops, the lighter 14-momme silk allows the draping to fall with greater fluidity. Each weight has been considered for the silhouette it brings to life. As silk moves from occasion dressing to the centre of Australian wardrobes, this balance of beauty and durability is what allows it to remain there.
Cream, Navy and Black: The Thinking Behind Each Silk Shade
Vanilla Sky
Cream silk carries something white does not: temperature. It holds a quiet warmth beneath the light, echoing the natural softness of silk. Worn alone, it feels gentle and luminous. Against black, that softness becomes something more deliberate.
Midnight Tide
Navy is what happens to blue after dark. Navy silk recalls deep water at night: fluid, dimensional, still moving. It carries the depth and gravity of black, with something softer at its edges.
Black Swan
In silk, black becomes more than simply a neutral, taking on a texture that absorbs light and allows the silhouette to reveal itself through movement rather than surface. Considered and quietly theatrical, our black silk essentials bring a sense of occasion without waiting for one.
How Do You Style Silk Separates? A Guide to Wearing Silk Day to Day
Silk separates invite a different way of dressing: less by outfit, more by moment. The same bias-cut pant moves from a meeting to dinner without being reconsidered in between. A slip stands alone in February and layers beneath a knit in June. The pieces return throughout the week in different registers, with the decision never quite made.
Camilla Franks designed CAMILLA Silk Essentials with precisely that in mind: “Worn together, they hold their own. Taken apart, each piece finds new life. A great matching set is never just one thing.”
These pieces belong beside the prints, never in place of them. A cream slip becomes a quiet foundation beneath a printed kaftan, while a bias-cut pant gives a printed blouse room to speak. Solid silk and signature prints live naturally in the same wardrobe, each revealing something new in the other.
What Inspired CAMILLA Silk Essentials?
It began with an evolution of process. Speaking on the inspiration behind her latest collection, Franks said she visited Austria not to collect, but to compose. "I knew what I was searching for, and I knew what to leave behind. What to place. Where to let things breathe." The collection emerged from that very instinct: Less noise. More precision. Ornament and air. Softness and structure. Opulence that doesn't announce itself.
CAMILLA Silk Essentials is where that philosophy finds its most concentrated expression. Here, cut, weight and colour carry the story. The artistry remains, simply finding new form. “The vision hasn’t changed: to dress women in colour, story, artistry and self-expression, but today I simply have a deeper understanding of the women I’m creating for.” Twenty-two years in, that understanding has been shaped by the beautiful realities of the women Camilla dresses.
“The woman I was designing for twenty-two years ago isn’t the same woman I’m designing for today. She still wants beauty, she’s still curious, and still adventurous. But today, she’s also running businesses, raising children, catching flights, caring for ageing parents, and still finding time for moments of joy among the beautiful chaos of everyday life. We’ve evolved alongside her, side-by-side, staying true to who we are and artistry that defines us. For years, I designed for life’s extraordinary moments. Today, I want to bring that same sense of wonder to the ordinary ones — because sometimes the school drop-off, a Tuesday lunch with friends, or a quiet walk deserve just as much beauty as a holiday in Capri.”
